Man Flies from New Jersey to Florida to Attack Gaming Rival with Hammer

According to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office, 20-year-old Edward Kang was arrested after he took an overnight flight from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey to Jacksonville International Airport in Florida to attack his rival.

“This is a weird one,” Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said at a briefing held on Monday. “Some things make you say hmm.”

Per Sheriff Bill Leeper, Kang booked a hotel room before he showed up at his rival’s house at around 2 a.m. on Sunday. According to Leeper, the suspect told his mother that he was going to visit a friend in Florida after he allegedly became angry at the victim while playing the multiplayer online game ArcheAge.

Kang checked into his hotel in Florida at approximately 2 a.m. Friday and went to an Ace Hardware location the next day to pick up a hammer and a flashlight, authorities stated.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, Kang allegedly snuck into the victim’s home in Fernandina Beach, Florida. Dressed in black and wearing gloves and a mask, Lee said Kang attacked the victim with the hammer once inside.

The victim’s stepfather was “awakened by screams for help” and after going to investigate, the man “found his stepson on the ground struggling with the attacker,” according to deputies, who reported that the two restrained Kang until authorities arrived on the scene.

Sheriff Leeper said the victim suffered severe head wounds that were determined to be non-life-threatening

Kang was booked at the Nassau County Jail on burglary and attempted murder charges, deputies said. Sheriff Leeper added that Kang is not cooperating with police.
